Pools

Awhile ago, lichess tried to integrate a system of pools of players to join in for a specific time control (such as 1 minute, 3 minute, and 5 minute). The problem with the pools was that there weren't enough players at the time to always keep them filled. Now lichess has grown to be one of the largest chess sites on the web, and I think adding pools would be much more successful this time around!
I agree, I think pools are worth another shot. Maybe just a 5 minute and a 1 minute pool to start with.
No, I don't think so.

Yea, we've gained about 1k players on average since then. But the pools were *completely* dead. Not just quiet, *completely dead*. It doesn't matter if you have 10k more players, 0 * 10k is still zero.
Aren't pools and tournaments basically the same? You get paired with someone once the game finishes? Just join a tournament.

Lol Clarkey, your math reminded me of a joke:

"I have 10 times as many friends as you!"
"Well, 10 times 0 is 0 sucker"

Im outta here.

Because it's a rate of usage. So the amount of people using part of a service will be a percentage of people using the whole service. That percentage doesn't change just because a few more people joined the site.
Personally I think that tournaments are an excellent replacement for the dead pools. The only problem with the tournaments is that there are no rating limits when you create them. This way you get constantly paired with much stronger and much weaker players...
