Just as an update, the console says "lichess.site.min.js:23 WebSocket connection to 'wss://socket2.lichess.org/lobby/socket/v4?sri=EpayJiPxu7s0' failed: WebSocket is closed before the connection is established."
This was after factory reset, firmware update.
On the lichess.dev site it shows only one player (it shows dashes on the regular site). I get the same websocket error.
I really know very little about networking but is port forwarding a thing that might help me? For the time being I am using the old Linksys WRT54G, but it is limiting my wi-fi speeds to 10Mbs.
So my problem seems to be resolved. Thank you to all that helped.
I think conventionally "port forwarding" refers to inbound connections; I wouldn't expect it to matter here, but also I don't know what to suggest and would appreciate help from anyone who knows networking.
