How can I understand cheaters ?

People who use chess engine assistance in rated chess games or push their rating with a second account have a big problem with their self-confidence. They want to be seen with high rating and think it´s themselves the people are amazed of.

On the other hand many chess engine developers try out their products in online chess.

If you got bullied in life, stroke down of all worth you had about yourself, then it is near to start thinking about helping yourself to be a bigger guy then you are. Chess is often compared with human skills like: intelligence, mental strength, "to be a better human than many others". So it is a very attractive area for this people to split their reality in something better.
I'm not so sure. How can they think it's themselves when it's obviously not?
Maybe it's more about hurting others. They didn't reach anything in chess, so they just enjoy seeing a better player lose by their hands. They didn't play, but they made him lose, made him feel bad, so this time it's the other guy who has the pain and not them. Anyway they must have big mental problems.
I think there are multiple motives for cheaters to do what they do:

1. he/she could want to troll people online/ruin the fun of chess for other people.
2. he/she could want to brag about a high rating to their friends.
3. he/she could be afraid of dropping in rating/losing and use engines only in losing positions to retain their rating.
4. he/she could be frustrated with a losing streak against a certain person online or in general and want to take revenge/take out the frustration against other players or the same player.
A psychological weakness of some type, maybe to do with their upbringing. I can't see much point otherwise, as you must have little pride if you are satisfied with an engineered win.
The topic of cheaters in online chess has always fascinated me. I guess I'll never really understand their thinking. It's a very sad way to live your life and I actually feel sorry for them. What a pathetic thing to do.
IMO it's for the laughs. It would produce the giggles imagining my hapless opponent against Stockfish in another window thinking 10 million positions per second, showing lines 30 piles deep and with my CPU getting noisy and warm. Not funny of course, but it would be to a cheater. Ok it is funny, but I wouldn't do it.
or maybe cheaters cheat because they want to see how computers manage to win against humans every time.
