How long does it take to "get good"?

@YousefMsam said in #11 ||I started playing chess 2 years ago‚ with a rating of 1200
Now I'm about 2200‚ I did it without a couch but i played a lot and watched some chess YouTube videos.
I'm 20 years old now||

What a coincidence!! I'm a 20 year old self-taught player as well. We've got the same rating-range. Also started 2 years ago.

Never had a coach (but I did have a nice "couch")

Never watched chess YouTube videos though. That's the only exception.
Nice to meet ya buddy!

There is no clear result like in most studies.

Is there a diffence between bullet (gaming) and classical (serious play)? Have you looked into that?
To put it in a nutshell: do all players want to improve or do they just like to play some quick games?

And as you wrote - improvement won't come from playing alone. My youngest often tells me that he had no idea what to play in that situation - there is just not enough knowledge to get better in that case.

Imo it would be really interesting to ask some (~100) players who got really good (any kind of master) how and what they trained at what age to get an impression on how to get better.

It's a question where I struggle myself at the moment. Although I study different things my play just don't get much better. Maybe I'm too old, maybe I don't play enough, maybe I should play other time modes, maybe I should train other things or maybe I need a trainer. Would be nice to know what to do.

Same question with my youngest - he is quite talented, but how do I continue with him? I have no idea, because I'm no master myself (as you can tell when you check my profile). He does need some training, but what should he do? What should I do with him? He plays for a club, but there is not much specific training.
I do wonder about @ZugAddict and other titled players' thoughts on "getting good". I remember his blog:
www.chess.com/blog/GargleBlaster/how-to-make-master-in-three-hundred-difficult-steps

I am also curious what the folks at Kaggle might have to say about this; say, this guy who claims that some openings are bad:
www.kaggle.com/datasnaek/chess/tasks?taskId=5575
www.kaggle.com/jeremsenn/chess-openings-scores/data

Maybe if I stopped playing openings which suck I could become NM someday.
Fascinating.

Here's my suggestion for the next topic:

How long is a piece of string?
According to this data, i'm improving faster than Hikaru Nakamura did... :/
(Edit) I'm only pointing out that some of the stuff he said is a bit flawed. I'm not by any ways saying i am better than Nakamura, he was almost a GM by the time he was my age...
Sorry if it looked like i was boasting, i wasn't, and great work @jcw024 :)
